Ideas about unity, patriotism, formation of a national identity, and belief in the common good are not universally shared. If we do not act, our country could be in conflict perpetually.<\/p>\n
Many of the social structures and institutions that were at the heart of Libyan identity in the past were eroded. To move forward, we need to rebuild community institutions, such as arts and cultural institutions, sports venues, civil society institutions, and professional associations, which promote national identity and build cultural, moral, and social values. These institutions must focus on building national identity, particularly amongst the youth, and instill values such as commitment to national destiny, patriotism and putting the nation first, unity, and respect for human rights, good governance, transparency, and accountability. Rebuilding and strengthening our spiritual institutions that teach and grow compassion in the hearts of youth will be critical to reviving our tradition of ethnic and religious tolerance and pluralism.<\/p>\n
