Aref Nayed, the Chairman of the Ihya Libya Movement, issued an open letter today to the head of UNSMIL, J\u00e1n Kubi\u0161, stating that the UN Security Council needs to be firm with the interim Government of National Unity (GNU) to ensure that it does not stray from its mandate which is to ensure that Presidential and Parliamentary elections take place as scheduled on 24 December 2021. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aref Nayed\u2019s letter to J\u00e1n Kubi\u0161 said the latest \u201cdisturbing maneuvers\u201d proved once again that the Libyan political status quo wants to maintain \u201cpower and privileges as long as they possibly can, at the cost of the continued suffering of the Libyan people\u201d. Nayed said to Kubi\u0161 that it was high time the UN Security Council \u201curgently acted with firmness and determination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged the UN Security Council to show determination and urgent action to \u201crestore to the long-suffering Libyan people their basic human rights of choosing their own leadership, in clean well-monitored direct Presidential and Parliamentarian Elections.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Islamic State terrorist group likely will launch an attack on Italy within weeks, not months, according to a senior Libyan government official.<\/p>\n
