Aref Nayed, with Libyan Ulema from across the country, established the League of Libyan Ulema. The League is made up of traditional religious scholars who supported an immediate end to the killings by the former regime in the early days of the February 17th Revolution. The League of Libyan Ulema was instrumental in seeking international humanitarian support, asserting the role of women in the Revolution, and preventing the destruction of religious sites.

The League of Libyan Ulema, now formalized as the network of Free Ulema, consists of some of Libya’s most senior and most respected Muslim religious scholars from various specializations and tribal backgrounds from across Libya.
