Rebuilding National Identity
Why it Matters
For centuries, Libya has been a country with diverse communities made up of several ethnic groups with a variety of cultural traditions that have coexisted peacefully. It is upon this tradition of mutual dependence and shared destiny that we must build the future Libya.

My Plan for Libya
Rebuilding Institutions That Promote National Values and Unity
Libya are still struggling with harnessing its social and cultural diversity towards achieving a shared vision for the country. Ideas about unity, patriotism, formation of a national identity, and belief in the common good are not universally shared. If we do not act, our country could be in conflict perpetually.
Many of the social structures and institutions that were at the heart of Libyan identity in the past were eroded. To move forward, we need to rebuild community institutions, such as arts and cultural institutions, sports venues, civil society institutions, and professional associations, which promote national identity and build cultural, moral, and social values. These institutions must focus on building national identity, particularly amongst the youth, and instill values such as commitment to national destiny, patriotism and putting the nation first, unity, and respect for human rights, good governance, transparency, and accountability. Rebuilding and strengthening our spiritual institutions that teach and grow compassion in the hearts of youth will be critical to reviving our tradition of ethnic and religious tolerance and pluralism.
