Providing Quality Healthcare to All

Providing Quality Healthcare to all

Why it Matters

Good public health will allow Libyans to live fuller and happier lives. However, post-conflict health system assessments have revealed that Libya’s healthcare system faces significant challenges in providing quality care. Our healthcare system lacks specialists in medical fields important to meeting the needs of the youth, veterans, and the elderly. Together we must work quickly to reshape Libya’s healthcare system through standardization and education. Greater access to quality healthcare is an essential factor in assuring security and stability throughout Libya.

My Plan for Libya

COVID-19 pandemic revealed that the health system in Libya lacks the necessary capabilities to confront and respond to the epidemic. As the epidemic entered the country, Libya had no plans to deal with and contain it, massive shortage in medical equipment, lack of trained medical personnel. The COVID-19 pandemic has become a living reality in all the world and our health system must be fully equipped to deal with it and provide the necessary health care to citizens and provide vaccines to be accessible to all.

We must work to provide a stronger health system capable of responding to the epidemic by carefully planning the purchase of diagnostic tests, face masks, personal protective equipment and strengthening local capacities, including training of health sector employees and rapid response teams, and ensuring our hospitals are fully prepared.

Developing a National Strategy

Though daunting, the task of developing a robust national healthcare strategy can help quickly raise the level of healthcare available to all Libyans. We must work to create national standards for public and private healthcare facilities to reestablish trust in the Libyan healthcare system. We must work together with local councils to decentralize the distribution of healthcare services and raise the level of care accessible in local communities.

Equal Access for All Libyans

Post-revolution Libya has been plagued by divisions and conflict. We must develop a model of healthcare with sufficient capacity, funding, and coverage for the entire population, regardless of ideological or tribal affiliation. In addition we must prepare a comprehensive strategy aimed at addressing major health challenges facing women and children. The introduction of a universal healthcare system can help ensure that all Libyans maintain equal access to quality healthcare services.

Focusing on Prevention

The wellbeing of all Libyans must remain the sole focus for healthcare projects. Development plans must place greater emphasis on public health education and prevention. Placing greater emphasis on reliable health information can help prevent ease the strain on Libya’s healthcare system. With the assistance of television, radio, and internet providers we can raise awareness of the dangers of tobacco and drug use, while promoting the importance healthy nutrition.
