Statement on the Briefing by the UN Envoy

27/02/2023

The Ihya Libya (Reviving Libya) movement welcomes the briefing presented by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Abdoulaye Bathily, before the United Nations Security Council on February 27th, 2023, especially his initiative to hold Libyan Presidential and Parliamentary elections this year.

Ihya Libya thanks the Special Envoy for respecting the will of more than 2.8 million Libyan voters who have been ready to cast their votes for more than a year, and for his efforts to address the delays in meeting their demands caused by a political class that only knows how to procrastinate and monopolize the resources of the Libyan people.

The Ihya Libya movement supports the establishment of a high-level advisory committee in Libya by the UN Envoy, which should bring together, not just in words but in deeds, various Libyan parties, including political institutions, prominent political figures, tribal leaders, civil society organizations, and active security parties, as well as representatives of women and youth.

Moreover, the UN Mission should avoid previous mistakes, which included the lack of true representation of the Libyan social fabric, and the absence of measures to promote transparency and combat bribery and corruption.

Ihya Libya also stresses the importance of national reconciliation and thanks the Special Envoy for emphasizing it and seeking the support of the African Union and the Presidential Council in this regard.

Furthermore, Ihya Libya backs the tremendous national efforts of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission and appreciates the UN Envoy’s support for its efforts, particularly its efforts to remove all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan territory.

Ihya Libya affirms the urgent need to protect Libyan resources from looting and waste by taking immediate and effective measures to stop corruption and hold its perpetrators accountable.

Additionally, it calls for the allocation of Libyan resources to provide a decent living and comprehensive service to its people without compromise or interference.

Finally, Ihya Libya calls on all its members to intensify meetings, arrangements, and preparations to compete in the presidential and parliamentary elections with determination and sincerity.
