Washington Supports Change in Libya

23/11/2019

WASHINGTON – The United States is preparing to change its stance, which was characterized by hesitation in dealing with the Libyan crisis, as it sometimes shows its support for the army commander, Khalifa Haftar, and other times, for the reconciliation government headed by Fayez al-Sarraj.

However, recent developments, especially Russia’s entry on the crisis line in a repetition of the Syrian scene, have made the administration of US President Donald Trump tend to resolve its position by supporting the army coming from the east and abandoning the Tripoli government, which has become hostages to armed militias that have classified some of their leaders on American lists of terrorism.

Washington’s desire to support change in Libya is in line with broad Libyan efforts to form a new government that will undertake a transitional phase following the entry of the army into the capital, Tripoli, and the expulsion of militias from it.
