The Libyan Government of Reconciliation Backtracks on the Handover of Saif al-Islam

Tripoli – The Libyan Government of National Accord has withdrawn from handing Saif al-Islam, son of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, to the International Criminal Court, after it announced that it would accept his trial outside his country.

The Ministry of Justice in the Government of National Accord said that it refuses to hand Saif al-Islam Gaddafi to the International Criminal Court and try him outside Libya, confirming that this is within the jurisdiction of the Libyan judiciary, following a series of sessions held by the court last week at its headquarters in The Hague to consider the appeal filed by Saif al-Islam’s defense. Concerning the illegality of handing over their client to the court, before the awaited verdict is pronounced in the coming days.
