Press Release

Statement by Political Movements and Parties on the Follow-Up of the Implementation of Holding Direct Presidential and Parliamentary Elections on December 24, 2021

25/04/2021

The political blocs and parties are closely following the increasing popular support to implement the entitlements of the direct Presidential and Parliamentary elections on schedule, in conjunction with the increasing keenness of the international community to hold these elections to get the Libyan crisis out of the tunnel in which it has been for more than a decade and the suffering and hardships it caused to the Libyan people.

While the political blocs and parties are aware of the attempts by some parties to obstruct and disrupt this long-anticipated entitlement by the people of the country, they, hereby, affirm the following:

  1. Their appreciation for the decisive role played by the UN Security Council through its issuance of Resolution No. (2570) that  emphasized the necessity to implement the entitlements of holding direct Presidential and Parliamentary elections on the scheduled date of December 24, 2021 in order to restore the legitimacy of the  institutions of the Libyan state and respond to the Libyan people’s aspirations for salvation from the state of instability and insecurity.
  2. Their assertion that the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) is not compromised and its incumbent administration will continue to pursue its duties in order to be able to lay down and implement all the electoral procedures and entitlements that are imperative to hold the elections on schedule, warning that any attempt to interfere in the HNEC and its management is aimed at impeding and postponing this national entitlement.
  3. Calling upon the House of Representatives to adopt the Constitutional Rule and issue the necessary laws for holding direct Presidential and Parliamentary elections, no later than July 1st, 2021, and that the delay in the adoption and issuance of the aforementioned will have serious repercussions.
  4. Commending the valuable efforts exerted by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to Libya, and members of the UNSMIL team in the country, to ensure that these elections are held on schedule. While we support the efforts of the United Nations, we call on the UN to adhere to the implementation of the agreed upon Roadmap and the decisions issued by the UN Security Council in this regard.

In conclusion, we warn everyone that attempts to disrupt or obstruct the holding of direct Presidential and Parliamentary elections on the scheduled date of December 24, 2021, according to the Roadmap adopted by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) in Tunis, will lead to dangerous repercussions, foremost among which is plunging the country into the vicious cycle of violence and war once again.
